Optical Fiber Technology for Temperature Measurement: Applications, Advantages, and Working Principles

Time:2024-07-17 Browse: 390

With the development of technology, fiber optic technology has shown great potential in the field of temperature measurement. Fiber optic temperature sensors are widely used in various industrial fields due to their unique advantages, such as anti electromagnetic interference, small size, light weight, and the ability to achieve long-distance transmission. This article will explore the application scope, advantages, and three main fiber temperature measurement technologies: fluorescent fiber, distributed fiber, and fiber Bragg grating.

Application scope:

Fiber optic temperature sensors have a wide range of applications in various industrial fields, including power systems, petrochemicals, aerospace, environmental monitoring, and more. They are particularly suitable for temperature monitoring in harsh environments such as high pressure, high temperature, strong electromagnetic interference, or corrosive environments.

Advantages Introduction:

Fiber optic temperature sensors have multiple advantages over traditional temperature measurement methods. Firstly, fiber optic sensors are not affected by electromagnetic interference, ensuring the accuracy of measurement data. Secondly, optical fibers have a small volume and light weight, making them easy to install and maintain. In addition, fiber optic sensors can achieve long-distance transmission and are suitable for measuring points that are long distances or difficult to access. Finally, fiber optic sensors have good corrosion resistance and are suitable for use in harsh environments.

working principle:

The working principle of fiber optic temperature sensors is mainly based on the response of fiber optic to temperature changes. The following are the working principles of three main fiber optic temperature measurement technologies:

Fluorescent fiber:

Fluorescent fiber optic temperature sensors utilize the sensitivity of fluorescent substances to temperature. When a fluorescent substance is irradiated with excitation light, it emits fluorescence. The change in temperature will affect the intensity and lifetime of fluorescence, and by measuring the changes in these parameters, the change in temperature can be calculated. Fluorescent fiber optic sensors are suitable for point temperature measurement and can achieve high-precision measurements.

Distributed optical fiber:

Distributed fiber optic temperature sensors are based on the principles of Raman scattering or Brillouin scattering. When laser pulses pass through optical fibers, scattered light is generated. The frequency and intensity of scattered light will vary with the temperature along the fiber optic cable. By analyzing the characteristics of scattered light, temperature distribution information along the fiber optic cable can be obtained. Distributed fiber optic sensors are suitable for long-distance and large-scale temperature monitoring.

Fiber Bragg Grating:

Fiber Bragg Grating Temperature Sensor utilizes the sensitivity of Bragg Grating in optical fiber to temperature. Bragg grating is a structure in which the refractive index of a fiber core periodically changes, and it can reflect light of specific wavelengths. The change in temperature can cause the expansion or contraction of the optical fiber, thereby changing the period of the Bragg grating and resulting in a change in the reflected wavelength. By measuring the change in reflected wavelength, the change in temperature can be calculated. Fiber Bragg grating sensors are suitable for high-precision and stable temperature measurement.

Conclusion:

Fiber optic temperature measurement technology has shown great potential for application in multiple industrial fields due to its unique advantages. Fluorescent fiber, distributed fiber, and fiber Bragg grating technologies each have their own characteristics and are suitable for different application scenarios. With the continuous advancement of technology, fiber optic temperature sensors will play a more important role in the field of temperature measurement in the future.
